A Creative Journey: From City to Countryside

Spread the love

My life’s path has taken me from the bustling streets of Stoke-on-Trent to the serene landscapes of the Lincolnshire Wolds, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Born and raised in the Potteries, I never imagined that one day I’d be living on an arable farm, managing exciting diversification projects, and finding new wells of inspiration in the countryside.

The farm, which has been in my husband’s family for generations, sits next to Cadwell Park Race Circuit. While my husband manages the farming operations, I’ve thrown myself into our diversification projects with enthusiasm. The transition from urban to rural life has been a revelation, opening my eyes to new possibilities and ways of living.

One of our most exciting ventures is our glamping site, Wold of Your Own. It’s not just accommodation; it’s an experience that allows us to share the beauty of our surroundings while promoting sustainable tourism. Picture this: two converted double-decker buses joined together to create a unique living space, complete with a hot tub and stunning views of the Lincolnshire Wolds. From solar power to locally sourced products, we’re always looking for ways to reduce our environmental impact whilst providing unforgettable experiences for our guests.

My love for the land extends beyond our glamping project. Foraging has become a passion, rooted in childhood memories of time spent on my grandfather’s allotment. There’s something incredibly satisfying about discovering the free, healthy, and delicious foods that nature provides. It connects you to the land in a profound way, teaching you to read the seasons and understand the delicate balance of ecosystems.

Whilst I love my rural home, the travel bug still bites regularly. I’ve explored America extensively, but my heart was truly captured by Fiji. The cultural differences and the warmth of the Fijian people left an indelible mark on me. These travel experiences continually influence my perspective, reminding me of the rich tapestry of human creativity and the importance of cultural exchange.

Our latest project is the conversion of an ambulance into a campervan. It’s early days yet, but we’re excited about the potential. The idea sprang from our desire for something different and more spacious than our old T5 camper. We’re aiming for a fully off-grid vehicle that can take us on grand adventures. If you’re curious about our progress, you can follow along on Instagram at @wolds.and.wander.

When I’m not working on our diversification projects or exploring the world of design, you might find me horse riding. I have two horses, and my daughter has a pony, adding another dimension to our rural life. In the winter, I love to hit the slopes for some skiing.

Balancing all these pursuits – managing diversification projects, coaching, travel, sustainability efforts – with family life is a constant juggling act. It requires a lot of organisation and, I joke, constant self-coaching! But it’s a challenge I relish, as each aspect of my life informs and enriches the others.

As for the future? Well, there are almost too many projects and goals to mention! But that’s the way I like it. Life is an adventure, and I’m always ready for the next exciting chapter.

From the industrial heritage of Stoke-on-Trent to the peaceful fields of Lincolnshire, my journey has been one of constant discovery. It’s this rich tapestry of experiences that I bring to my design work and my coaching practice. After all, creativity doesn’t exist in a vacuum – it’s nourished by the full spectrum of life’s adventures.

So, here’s to the next adventure, whatever it may be. Whether it’s helping a client unlock their creative potential, converting an ambulance, or simply enjoying a foraged meal with my family, I’m ready for it all. Care to join me on this wild ride?
